The impact of Safari
Update August 2008 One of the reasons we have a lot of books here is because
of our policy to have a well stocked library with books covering a wide range of
topics in our field of work. We bought a lot of books 'just in case' we would need
such a book on short notice. When we encounter a technical problem, we want to be
able to just go to our library and just pick a book on the topic from our shelf.
Instead of buying paper books, we have switched to a
Safari subscription. This gives us a number of benefits:
- We don't have to bring our books with us when we are working outside our own offices.
We often had to look something up in our books, and even though we actually had
the book, we were unable to consult it because we were in the customer's offices.
- We done need physical shelf space anymore. We were running out of space!
- Books are searchable, even books we haven't bought.
We expect the number of books added to this list to drop dramatically compared to
the past, as we will only acquire paper books if we see a real need to have the
paper edition.
